Behind the Bag: Emily Herbert, Writer + Presenter

"Crafting stories with glittering heart."  Isn't that a little bit magical?  Emily is a writer, presenter and co-host of one of my favourite podcasts Life on the Land from the fabulous magazine Graziher.

She's also wife to sculptor Adam Humphreys and new mum to Huckleberry Herbert Humphreys, born in January this year.

Read on for more about Emily....

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Emily Herbert and if I was to sum up my identity and career in one word, it would be storyteller. I’m a freelance writer, presenter and new mum to my baby boy, Huckleberry.

I write for a swathe of glossy magazines, as well as working as a copywriter for various business owners and PR agencies. I’m also the co-host of the Graziher magazine podcast, Life on the Land.

At the moment I’m living on a small farm in north west New South Wales with three sausage dogs, two jack russells, many horses, my husband and my parents. We were living in New Zealand’s Wanaka when we came across the ditch to get married in 2020, and were stranded due to the pandemic.

What is the most beautiful thing you own?

The most beautiful thing I own would have to be our newborn son! I am claiming him as deliciously mine until he no longer wants to wear the label. I am a serial baby gazer. Materially, the most beautiful thing I own would be my wedding dress, which I wore on our dramatically reduced COVID-19 wedding day. My mum, two sisters and I found the material at Sydney’s Saigon Fabrics, an experience in itself. The gown is double lined cream silk, and the skirt is couture, thickly hand-embellished with gold sequins from Paris – it was the last square meter the shop had and it was love at first sight.

What is the most practical thing you own?

My welsh husband, Adam and I have lived in four countries in the last three years; Botswana, New Zealand, Wales and now Australia. He always says there’s no such thing as bad weather – just bad clothing and a poor attitude. As I’m a cold frog, my most practical things I own circulate around cooler climates, and include a pair of Dubarry Clare Country boots – waterproof, warm and incredibly comfortable – and an Icebreaker down jacket which is genuinely like wearing a doona.

What must you have in your bag before you leave home?

My airpods. They’re the ultimate accessory for easy hands-free calls and podcast listening on the go, and so small they pack in any bag - including my Bahru Mini-Florence!

Which travel destination is next on your bucket list?

Either back to New Zealand to show off wee Huck to my Kiwi grandmother and aunt, or back to Wales where we intend to live for a while, when the pandemic is a little less pandemic-ey.

What products or brands are you loving at the moment - fashion, homewares or beauty?

2020 turned me into a complete skincare fanatic. I’m adoring the Body Shop’s Sumptuous Cleansing Butter and the entire Esmi skincare range.

I’m also loving cold brew coffee as an easy one-handed way to get my caffeine fix while carrying a baby, and am devoted to my Hario Mizudashi Coffee Pot.

Finally, I recently ordered a pair of Melbourne brand, Jfahri’s ankle boots in Neon Pink which I wore to a wedding. They passed the dance floor test for comfort and drew a lot of love from onlookers.

What are you reading, watching or listening to?

I’m reading Julia Baird’s Phosphorescence which is incandescently beautiful and deserves every single iota of its hype.

I’m watching It’s a Sin on Stan – a joyful, raw and harrowing exploration of HIV/AIDS in 1980s London. Run, don’t walk to watch!

I’m always listening to Mia Freedman’s No Filter podcast; she’s such a talented interviewer and her guests are as diverse as they are thought provoking.

Which bag would you reach for - the classic neutrals or the statement metallic gold or silver?

Statement all the way! I love a metallic and think it’s as much a neutral as leopard print, which I’ve been known to wear three different prints of in one sitting.

Which is your favourite bag from the Bahru collection and why?

Currently, I’m using the Paris in metallic gold as a nappy bag and I love it. The leather is scrumptious, it’s roomy enough to fit all of the nappies, enough pockets for bits and bobs and looks fly as heck on the pram!
